Morocco: abusive dismissal and violation of the union rights for cleaning workers in Casablanca

Cleaners will resume work on Tuesday in Casablanca. On Monday, they were on strike to denounce the authorities’ non-commitment to their promises of a serious dialogue and negotiations about their pending demands.

The strike came along with the beginning of the services of the French societies ‘Averda’ and ‘Derichebourg’, who are now in charge of the safety and hygiene services of Casablanca according to the new contracts.

The workers’ union, affiliated to the Moroccan Workers’ Union (UMT), stated that the responsible parties did not commit to open a serious dialogue about the workers’ demands and didn’t work on providing a good work environment. It added: “taking the unilateral decision of sending the workers back to their previous departments is a violation of their rights and achievements and a denial of the efforts, sacrifices and good services they have been giving to the sector for years”.

The union explained that by accepting the demands of the workers, the Casablanca city council will improve the workers’ lives and create a quality work environment from which the city and its inhabitants will benefit.

The Union denounced the violation of union’s freedom and rights, the dismissal of workers and harassment subjected on unionists by Averda.

It noteworthy that Derichebourg works is active in Casablanca’s region, Sidi Belyout, Maarif, Mers Sultan and Ben M'Sick while Averda works in Hay Hassani’s region, Aïn Chock, Roches Noires, Hay Mohammadi, Sidi Bernoussi, Sidi Moumen and Aïn Sbaa.
