Jordan Labor Watch announced on their website that many tour guides held a protest last Wednesday in front of the Ministry of Tourism while many others held protests in Petra, Aqaba and Jerash to protest against the lack of attention by the Ministry toward their demands.
Tour guides ask for the cancellation of the ministerial note to Amoun University; as they refuse that any new session takes place without the supervision of the Jordan Tour Guide Association (JTGA) and without a minimum of 30 persons per session. They also ask for the cancellation of the Hussein University session and to set the minimum language score to 80%.
The protestors ask for the JTGA to be consulted for every decision; for all offices to respect the wages defined by the note of June 16th 2019 and not to deliver Chinese translators any work permits and to stop them from working.
They also demand that no permit should be delivered without the approval of the Association (JTGA) et refuse the ministerial plan to raise the tour guides’ number to 2000, which is, according to them, beyond the market’s needs and would result in hidden unemployment. According to the protestors, new tour guides have to send their application to the Association in coordination with the Ministry; Middle East University must be the only one allowed to train tour guides through an agreement between the Association and the University under the Ministry’s supervision.
