Egypt: The National Company for Steel Industries’ workers on strike.

Dozens of employees of the National Steel Industries Company, one of Orascom's companies, have been on strike since the 10th of June at the company's headquarters in 6th of October city, in protest against the company's non-implementation of the labour agreement with the trade union party in the engineering industries sector, in addition to the company’s issuance of a decision to replace 200 workers to one of the company’s branches in the city of Ain Sukhna, according to the workers.

According to the workers’ testimonies in El-Zaman News website, the company decided to close its branch in 6th of October city, which is the main branch, and told the workers that they will be transferred to the company’s other branch in the city of Ain Sukhna, in groups. Indeed, all workers were transferred except 250 workers, who were told that they would be transported soon. However, the workers waited 4 months without being transferred. During that period, the old equipment was moved. Then, modern equipment was brought from another company called the National Equipment of Orascom.

The workers explained that they entered into strike, after they came to the workplace and were surprised by the issuance of a decision by the company's management to recruit new workers in one of the work sites in the administrative capital of Orascom, highlighting that this decision is illegal.

The company refused to give the workers moving to the administrative capital a transferring allowance. In fact, the work will start from 7 am to 7 pm (everyday), without counting the overtime hours, in addition the recruitment decision did not specify in which branch it will return to work, especially that the National Steel Industries Company has been closed.

It is noteworthy that the Giza Labour Office rejected the workers' complaint regarding the company’s non-implementation of its agreement. After four hours of negotiations, the office asked them to write a complaint that they had been arbitrarily dismissed, which was refused by workers.
