The Kuwait Society for Human Rights called for the implementation of the laws to protect workers from the exposure to extreme heat, with the onset of the summer, as the temperatures reach 50 degree and even more sometimes, which is stipulated by the international law.
The Kuwait Society for Human Rights called on all citizens and residents of Kuwait to monitor the violations regarding the employment at noon in open places, during the summer. It asked those who monitor these violations to published them on the social networks through photos and videos.
The organization said in a statement that this call comes in support to the activation of the decision to ban the work in open places during the heat ( starting from the first of June to the end of August) ,where this decision prevents the employment of workers in open places from 11 am to 5 pm, in order to ensure their safety.
The organization called on the employers to respect the law, protect the workers’ rights and to create a decent working environment for them, as well as to provide them with safer measures in the field of health and safety, in accordance with the international standards. In fact, the activation of the General Authority for Labour Force’s decision No. 535 of 2015 on the prohibition of the employment of workers in exposed places is an indicator that reflects the culture of respect for human rights in general and the workers' rights in particular.
It is noteworthy that Kuwait records every year several violations of the local laws about the protection of workers from the summer heat, and record several incidents associated with those abuses that are usually related to the employers’ greed to make more profits without taking into account the conditions of their employees. In fact, the vast majority of workers in Kuwait, especially those who work in hard jobs, with low incomes are expatriates, which makes any accident endangering the life of one of these workers a diplomatic problem, as it was the case with the crisis between Kuwait and the Philippines over the murder of a Filipino worker.
