The head of Labour Inspection Department in the Libyan Ministry of Labour, Hadi Suwehli, affirmed in a press statement that the current Egyptian labour force are few, stressing that the contracting sector suffers from a shortage of labour force due to the decline of the economic conditions and security disturbances. He pointed out that the construction market in Libya depends on about 75% of Egyptian labour force.

The number of Egyptian workers in Libya exceeded 800 thousand by the end of 2013, according to previous statistics by the Libyan Ministry of Labour, but it has decreased in recent times because of the deteriorating situation in the country. In fact, the government reports indicate that about 90% of the Egyptian employees work in the fields of materials’ construction, bakery, butcher and barber.

According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (governmental), the country's workforce is about 29.036 million, including the number of "unemployed". In fact, the unemployment rate reached 9.9% (2.875 million people), in the second quarter of 2018, according to official data.

According to unofficial studies and economists, the unemployment rate in Egypt exceeds 25% of the total labour force.

On the outskirts of Tripoli, in Al-Hadhra university, the Egyptian University Professor, Nabil Shehata, confirmed to the "New Arab" website that the Libyan labour market is not organized and that the number of Egyptian and foreign workers, who came to the country during the past two years is not known due to the country’s instability, as well as the illegal workers.

In fact, Libya is witnessing political, security and economic crises that have led to a decline in the development rates, an increase in the unemployment rate and the rise of inflation.
