The Lebanese authorities have been harshly criticized for the closure of shops and institutions ruled by Syrians who work without work permits or identity papers that would enable them to work on the Lebanese territory, like the foreign workers of other nationalities. The Ministry of Labour justified this as it is the implementation of the labour law.
It is expected that the Minister of Labour will hold a press conference to launch the ministry's plan to combat the illegal foreign labour on the Lebanese territory.
The minister affirmed in statements to the media that the priority in this campaign is "to provide employment opportunities for the Lebanese workers, and that workers who violate the Lebanese law and work in an illegal way, are considered as an illegal competitor of the Lebanese workers in many sectors."
The criticisms of the Lebanese authorities have escalated, following the closure of the illegal Syrian shops, and the refusal to allow the Syrian citizens even those who are granted a courtesy residence (normally granted to Syrians married to Lebanese women or Lebanese mothers who have lived in Lebanon before the Syrian crisis). They must obtain residence permits for work so that they can work in a legal way This law has not been implemented in the past, and it has now been activated, in light of the discussions about the repercussions of the Syrians’ displacement and the calls for their voluntary deportation.
