The human rights organizations warned of the Lebanese authorities’ plan to demolish the Syrian refugees’ temporary shelter, which would affect about 25 000 people, half of which are children.
The Supreme Council of Defence issued a decision to demolish the houses built by the Syrian refugees in squatter camps, except for those made of wood and plastics, according to the organizations.
In Arsal, a border town with Syria, there are more than 5 680 cement houses, with more than 25 000 people living in these homes, including some 15 000 children.
The Lebanese authorities granted the Syrian refugees a deadline until June 9 to implement the demolition order.
The three organizations, including “Save the Children” and “World Vision”, called on the Lebanese government to halt the demolition.
“This decision will be very shocking for these poor children, who are already deprived of going to school and suffer from food shortage.”, said the organizations, noting that the demolition would affect the lives of some 15 000 children.
About 1.5 million Syrians live in Lebanon, most of them in camps across the country, especially in the eastern Bekaa Valley, adjacent to Syria.
