Alkarama Foundation for Human Rights revealed the repression imposed against some people, who cooperate with the United Nations in the UAE and issued a report to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The UAE report highlighted the sufferings of Ahmed Ali Mekkawi, who was sentenced with 15-year imprisonment of 15-year-old Ahmed Ali Mekkawi by the UAE Federal Court, including torture, arbitrary detention and solitary confinement under the ground.
In March 2019, the Public Prosecution initiated new legal proceedings against Mekkawi, his sister, his nephew and his lawyer, accusing them of " smearing the UAE’s image” based on the television interviews and the Facebook page run by his nephew. Mekkawi suffered a lot because the effects of torture, including severe back pain and the inflammation in his limbs because of the removal of his fingernails.
The report stressed also the Mohamed Chaker Ezz file, mentioned by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in his report in 2018. However, he remained subject to torture, in detention, despite the decision of the UN working group on the arbitrary detention of 2017, calling for his release.
The last time he was allowed to communicate with his relatives was on 14 February 2019. His family expressed their deep concern that his isolation and relationship with the United Nations mechanisms would lead to further reprisals acts, torture and ill-treatment.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, highlighted in his reports of 2014, 2017 and 2018, the repression against Ahmed Mansour, a populart human rights defender, who was arrested in March 2017 and on 29 May 2018. He was sentenced to ten years 'imprisonment and three years under supervision, in addition to a fine of one million dirhams ($ 272,000).
On December 31, 2018, the Federal Supreme Court upheld Ahmed Mansour's sentence. In March 2019, Ahmed Mansour entered in a hunger strike to protest against his unfair trial and prison conditions, according to Alkarama’s report.
