Egypt / Menoufia: The expulsion of eight workers from Gemma Ceramics’ factory on charges of inciting the strike

A number of workers at Al Jawhara Ceramics Factory, presented a memorandum to the Manpower Directorate, in Sadat, in Menoufia governorate after being dismissed for inciting strikes and disrupting work.

The workers expressed in their complaint that the dismissal of 8 workers by the management of Gemma Ceramics’ old and new factories is an arbitrary decision, stressing that they did not organize any protest or strike, as claimed by the factory’s management.

One of the dismissed workers told Al-Watan website that once the workers finished the work’s second session, they started discussing their weak salaries that did not increase for years, the small annual bonuses granted to them and the incentive for production, which is paid according to specific months rather than the whole year.

He added: "We were surprised the next day by the layoff of 5 employees and 3 others, inciting the strike and disrupting workers, although that all the machines kept working with non-stop.”

The worker pointed out that they tried to meet the factory’s owner more than once to clarify their situation and salaries, especially in light of the high prices, but all the attempts failed, pointing out that a negotiating session in the Labour Office should have taken place, but the factory’s officials didn’t show-up, despite that the dismissed workers’ main aim is to return to work.
