The General Federation of Oman Trade Unions rejected the decision taken by Larsen & Toubro Electromech LLC company concerning the layoff of 430 workers and accused the cabinet of being the only responsible of the social, economic and security repercussions, following this decision.
The General Federation pointed out to the statement issued by the cabinet in November 2015 on the companies’ layoff of workers because of financial and economic conditions. Moreover, it emphasised on all the companies, in all sectors not to take such measures, without the competent authorities’ consultation, in order to find the best ways to enable them maintain the labour force.
It stressed that despite all this, the cabinet has not taken the necessary preventive measures to prevent such cases, calling for the continuation of the Ministerial Committee’s work, which was formed by the cabinet to assess these issues and to expedite the issuance of the Labour Law, which was signed in May 2014, as well as the issuance of regulatory lists for various economic sectors, including the oil and gas sector, to include the necessary measures, in order to ensure a safe and stable work environment.
The general federation stressed also the need to expedite the introduction of the unemployment insurance system to extend the scope of social protection in such cases and to avoid their serious repercussions.
