Strong protests in Qatar: The workers in sports’ institutions are asking for their delayed wages

Hundreds of foreign workers launched strong protests at a number of construction companies working at the World Cup sports institutions in Qatar on Monday, due to the deteriorating living conditions, the delay in the payment of salaries , and the feeling that the Qatari labour offices cheated on workers, as they promised many workers from India, Nepal and the Philippines to get a free visa called "Azad".

However, the workers were surprised that they were obliged to obtain paid work permits for jobs that were different from the one they came for. Moreover, their salaries were a delayed from 3 to 10 months, € 1,700 per worker, according to the Amnesty International estimates.

According to a recent report by “the Middle East Monitor”, expatriate workers account for 91% of Qatar's total population, particularly from East and Southeast Asia.

In 2018, the expatriates’ number in Qatar declined by 9.4% compared to 2017, due to the pressures on the employees, which lead them to leave the country and because of the poor economic conditions they live in.

Foreign workers' remittances to Qatar reached 41.54 billion riyals ($ 11.5 billion) in 2018, compared with 45.86 billion riyals ($ 12.7 billion) in 2017.

The number of expatriates in Qatar is more than 2.1 million from almost 100 nationalities around the world, representing 91% of Qatar's citizens, where most of them Asians.

After arriving in Doha, the Nepalese workers found that this type of visa was not available to this work through, which led them to cut the paid "work permits".

During the past two days, photos and videos circulated regarding the protest against the foreign workers’ non-payment of their salaries, especially those working in the transport sector, while “Al Ain” has not confirmed yet the date of the pictures.
