Last Tuesday, the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions opened a three-day workshop on the effective trade union communication skills, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO). The workshop was lectured by Mamadou Soari, the director of communication at the International Labor Organization (ILO), and Nidham Qahoush, the regional officer for the Arab region, in the organization’s activities’ office.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, Abdul Qader Al-Shihabi spoke about the importance of media and trade unionism in order to present the current important issues regarding the labor affairs adopted by the ILO, such as the decent work file and the file of the tripartite agreement.
Shaher Saad, a member of the organization’s board of directors, stressed that there are attempts to reduce the role of the organization, pointing to the importance of cooperation to meet these challenges. He spoke about a new declaration, currently under preparation, starting from the launching of the Philadelphia Declaration, which will be launched during the next ILO conference.
This declaration comes in line with the concepts of decent work, the future of work and sustainable development.
For her part, Maria Helena André, the director of the ILO's office of labor activities, stressed the importance of communication skills for building organizations. Moreover, she highlighted that the organization's program, which is part of this workshop, is a belief of this conviction and seeks to improve the means of communication between the unions as an essential tool.
It is noteworthy that the organization has chosen one organization in each continent to implement this program, starting from this workshop. The General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions was chosen to represent Asia, as indicated by the workshop's general lecturer and the organization's communication officer, Mamadou Soari, who confirmed that the program’s aim is to support the trade union organizations with regard to the media impact, and the mechanisms of using the means of communication to activate this goal.
According to Mamadou Soari, the program also aims to provide commitment and partnership among the workers' organizations, provide more commitment to the implementation of the international treaties and conventions.
