Iraq / Basra: The importation of juices and pastries threatens to close dozens of factories

The owners of ice cream factories, juices and pastries called for the activation of laws that support the local production and stop the importation of these products from neighbouring countries.

This was during a protest rally organized by dozens of protesters, last week, in front of the local government building in Basra.

The protesters stressed in statements to the local media that they are asking for the halt in the importation of pastries and ice cream, especially from Jordan because they pass through the port of "Trebil" without customs fees or taxes, and showed that Basra has 50 plants for the production of pastries and ice cream, where hundreds of workers, technicians and administrators work. They added that the increase of imported pastries, from the beginning of the summer led to the disruption of some of these factories, and threatens to disrupt more of them.
