The Kuwaiti women strive to gain more benefits in their civil rights, such as their demand to repeal Article 153 of the Penal Code to aggravate the punishment of a person who commits a crime for the purpose of defending honour, or to extend the implementation of the same article to women who murder abusive husbands.
Finally, a Kuwaiti lawyer called on the Ministry of the Interior to add the wives’ name on the husbands’ passport, as it is the case for the husbands, which names are automatically on the wives’ passports
The lawyer stressed the need to amend Article 15 of Law No. 13/1962 concerning the issuance of the travel documents, where the wives should have the right to ask the competent authorities to add their names on their husbands’ passport, similarly to the husbands, or to cancel their husbands’ names from the wives’ passport, which is the case in most of the countries of the world. In fact, this amendment prevents many problems such as the betrayal of unfaithful men who claim that they are not married when they travel and contract secret marriages.
The lawyer stressed that there are other demands for the amendment of Article 15 of the same law, such as to give women the right to apply for passports without the consent of their husbands, in respect to their person. She also asserted that giving them this right enhances the respect for women. She gave the example of a woman taking the position of the Minister of Interior and being still unable to apply for a passport without her husband’s consent, which is currently the case of the female members in the two councils (municipality and nation), as well as other Kuwaiti leadership positions.
