Morocco: unprecedented repression during the teachers’ peaceful movements

The Moroccan government implemented the law of expulsion from work on Wednesday, that could include thousands of striking teachers, unless they give up "within a deadline of 60 days “, according to the Moroccan Education Minister, Said Amazazi. In fact, these teachers have entered into strike since the beginning of March 2019 to ask for their integration in the public service with permanent employment contracts.

The 55 000 temporary teachers in Morocco have been on strike since early March, accusing the ministry and the government of being negligent. They accused the government of ruining the public school through obeying to the dictates of the global financial institutions, against the will of people.

The national coordination of the teachers who were forced to contract in Morocco confirmed that thousands of teachers were subjected to unprecedented repression on Saturday night, during their peaceful strike, which witnessed very bad moments through the barbaric intervention of the authorities at night.

In its statement, the coordination revealed that the police used water tank trucks, trained sniffer dogs, motorcycles, batons and other repression mechanisms and equipment, along with the presence of the police to follow the dismissed teachers, until sunrise.

Moreover, the teachers’ dormitory was destroyed by brutal attacks, which resulted in heavy injuries among the teachers between wounds and fractures.

The coordination committee declared its continuation of the struggles and protests and renewed its demand to integrate workers within the regulations of the Ministry of National Education. It also affirmed its rejection of the academic workers’ regulations under the pretext of regionalism, stressing that it must be based on achieving the economic, social and political balance among the different regions in Morocco.
