The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions issued a statement rejecting the amendments to the Labour Law approved by the Senate. The federation condemned also its exclusion by the joint committee (labour and legal) in the Senate to discuss these amendments while representatives of employers and civil society organizations were present.
The Federation stressed its struggle for the issuance of a satisfying labour law, holding its responsibility in working on the development of the labour legislations in line with the international standards and which would serve the interests of workers.
The Federation stated that it has been in a contact with the Jordanian Legislative Council and the Senate, which resulted in several agreements and consensuses on the need to review some articles of the Labour Law, especially those affecting the trade union rights and freedoms, and which are violating the international labour standards on workers' fundamental rights.
Despite the dialogue and communication with the Senate in this regard, the federation was surprised to learn that a meeting with the work and law committees to discuss the law was held and surprised by the presence of some institutions of civil society and the deliberate absence of the unions’ representatives, despite the latter’s request to be present.
The Senate approved the amendments to the Labour Law without making any amendments to the version given by the House of Representatives. This led to great disappointment among the trade union community, as the law is a restriction of the trade union freedoms in violation of the basic rules of trade unionism and trade union democracy.
The General Federation renewed its rejection of these amendments and considered them as unfair, as they do not meet the aspirations of the labour movement to find a modern labour law that goes in line with the economic and social changes, as well as the international legislation. The Federation renewed its commitment to struggle for a labour law in accordance with the international standards.
