Teacher gatherings in several Mauritanian cities to protest against their deteriorating professional and social conditions

The Mauritanian primary school teachers held vigils in the capital and in different cities of the country on Thursday, raising slogans calling for the reform of education and the redress of workers. They also stopped teaching for two hours.

The Free Union of Mauritanian Teachers (SLEM) confirmed that the vigils covered all the provinces of the country, stressing that they are part of a series of protest activities organized by the union for the reform of education in Mauritania and to value the job of teaching.

The union called on the authorities to open negotiations with the teachers about their demands and meet them, expressing that the petition includes demands including the raise in the teachers’ salary, the increase in all bonuses by 50%, and the payment of promotions and their inclusion in the payroll.

Moreover, the teachers asked for the payment of the chalk allowance throughout the school year, use of geographical points as a criterion for the distance premium of teachers, the payment of the chalk allowance for the teacher headmaster, the improve of the health insurance services to include parents, the consideration of assistant teachers as insurance teachers, as well as the termination of contracts and the separation between the public and the private sectors
