Gaza: Hamas assaults the peaceful demonstrators

Last Thursday, dozens of protestors in the north and south of the Gaza Strip were subjected to severe violence by the security forces belonging to the Hamas movement, following their protests, denouncing the high prices and the miserable social and economic conditions that they have been living in since Hamas came to power, according to the Palestinian non-governmental organizations network and eyewitnesses.

The network confirmed that the security forces of Hamas arrested dozens of protestors, who raised slogans and banners, calling for the improving of the living conditions, services and health sector.

The protestors were threatened by weapons and many activists were pursued even in their homes in a flagrant violation of the freedom of expression and peaceful protest and assembly.

The network, which includes more than one hundred NGOs, said in a statement that it "strongly condemns the campaign of arrests by the security forces in Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip against dozens of citizens on the grounds of calling for a peaceful gathering to ask for the improve of the life conditions in the Gaza Strip."

The statement stressed "the need for the immediate release of all detainees and to stop the protestors’ detention to ensure the right to expression and peaceful assembly guaranteed by law."
