Media reports revealed that the war in Yemen has caused problems and tragedies in all kinds of professions in the country. In fact, in the field of journalism, the war has contributed to the closure of many institutions and newspapers, as well as the blocking of websites. Thus, most of the remaining local and foreign media are serving the war.
The reports added that most of the journalists are deprived of their salaries, while the rest get only a salary of about $ 100, in addition to the repression of freedoms, which contributed to the deterioration of journalists’ lives. Since the beginning of the war, they suffered a lot; they even resorted to leave the cities and return to the countryside and work in agriculture, but the situation is almost the same, as they still suffer from poverty and the same miserable conditions.
The remaining journalists in the cities have a different situation, but they suffer as well, as many journalists ended up looking for new jobs, like running ice cream shops and real estate agencies and some of them have even sacrificed all what they had to open a small shop to support their families.
The Secretary-General of the Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate, Mohammed Shabita, believes that the transfer of the Yemeni journalists to other professions is very painful. Moreover, the war itself is a tragedy, as it closed the platforms, cut salaries and restricted freedoms, resulting in different forms of suffering to the journalists. Although the provision of a livelihood to their families through the new jobs, the journalists suffer also at the psychological level, as they can hardly adapt to their new reality, trying to forget their profession and the reality of their country.
In a statement to Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, the head of the journalists' syndicate revealed that 1 500 Yemeni journalists, who are registered in the union's lists suffer from very difficult conditions.
