The Sudanese security and intelligence service arrested a number of opposition activists, on Thursday when tear gas dispersed hundreds of protesters, while trying to organize a march towards the presidential headquarters.
The human rights sources stated that the security forces arrested about 24 members of the opposition, noting that among the detainees are the Secretary-General of the Communist Party Mohammed Mukhtar Khatib and three prominent members of the Umma Party.
The authorities also detained the spokesman of the professionals’ rally, the main organizer of protests.
The opposition members were detained in central Khartoum in preparation for handing over a memorandum calling for a new interim government to replace President Omar al-Bashir and his administration, but the government rejected these new political initiatives considering them illegal.
