Algeria: Sonelgaz company: arrests among trade unionists

Rauf Mellal, the president of the Trade Union Confederation of the productive forces, said that the Algerian police arrested a number of trade unionists in front of the Ministry of Justice during a vigil on February 3 to ask for their right to return to their jobs as required by law.

Mellal said that the situation has become very dangerous. The authorities are following the unionists and they are suppressing them by the police, while it keeps covering for the officials, who violate the law. He wondered why the authority does not pay attention to the international agreements, and does not respect many of the decisions issued by the International Labour Organization, how it deals with the local domestic laws.

Mellal stressed that he will file new complaints against the authority and that he will formally request the ILO to be more serious in implementing the standards in Algeria and to put real pressure on the authority to respect the international law.

It is noteworthy that during the vigil, in front of the Ministry of Labour, which was launched by the Sonelgaz trade unionists, they arrested Zakaria Bin Haddad, the Secretary General of the Energy Syndicate, and Ben Arfa Wahid of Tebessa and Selmani Mohammed Al-Amin Zakaria of Mela and Suleiman Bin Al-Zin of Ouargla governorate, who were released later.
