A Syrian woman who was a refugee in Al-Rikban camp set herself on fire on Saturday because of the cold and her inability to provide food for her three children for several days.
"A woman burned herself and her children inside her tent for not eating for three days." said Khaled Al-Ali, a spokesman for the camp's civil administration from the German news agency. "Her neighbours extinguished the fire and drove the lady and her three children out of the burned-out tent. They were also transferred to take the necessary medical treatment, in the hospitals of the Jordanian Kingdom. "
Al-Ali confirmed that the woman, “Sundus Fathallah”, 28 years old, and one of her 3 children were seriously injured while the other two children were lightly injured.
The Rikban camp is located in the south-east of Syria near the Syrian-Jordanian border about 13 km from “Al-Tanf” US base, which is inhabited by the American forces, in addition to a number of opponents.
“"Al-Ali” highlighted that the camp's residents, who are more than 40 000 people suffer from extreme cold due to the lack of trees in this bare region and their inability to purchase oil materials. In fact, the price of litres of diesel reached through the control areas of government forces varies between 500 and 700 Syrian Pounds, which is the equivalent of 1 to 1.5 dollars, while the original price is less than half a dollar per litre.
He pointed out that the prices of food and vegetables are several times higher than their price in the areas controlled by the Syrian government, amid a complete absence of the humanitarian organizations.
