Yemen: The injury of 15 workers, following the explosion of one of the Aden’s oil refinery tanks and the union calls for an investigation

According to “Xinhua” news agency, 15 Yemeni workers were injured Saturday in an explosion and a fire in an oil refinery in the southern city of Aden.

An official local source told “Xinhua” that a tank exploded and was set on fire on Friday at the Aden oil refinery in the Directorate of Brega, west of the city of Aden, adding that the explosion and the continuation of the fire in the tank caused the injury of 15 workers, who were transferred to the city hospitals to receive treatments.

In the same context, a statement by Aden Refinery Company revealed that the explosion heard on Saturday afternoon blasted from the same tank because of the pressure, after the fire reached the bottom of the tank, which continued to ignite since Friday, after the success of the company’s fire brigade to cease the fire and isolate the burning tank from the rest of the reservoirs.

The statement added that "The latest blast resulted in varying casualties among the workers, who were watching the fire”.

In the same context, Abdullah Al-Huwaidi, the head of the Yemeni oil workers' union, asked for opening an urgent investigation to uncover the circumstances and put an end to what is happening in one of the country's most important economic establishments. "Yesterday the fire was almost completely extinguished, however, the escalation of the fire today represents a threat to the other reservoirs, which confirms that this incident was deliberate and that there is someone behind it."

In fact, the state-owned Aden refinery is the largest oil refinery in Yemen, and it was established in 1952.
