The unemployed protesters arrived in the Tunisian capital after traveling about 350 kilometres on foot, yesterday, to ask for their right to work, following their success in the recruitment tests for more than a year ago.
Dozens of protesters left the city of “Meknesi” in the province of “Sidi Bouzid” on Wednesday and arrived yesterday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry and Energy where they entered in an open-ended strike, amid the presence of the security forces.
The protesters have signed employment contracts since December 2017, after succeeding in the employment test of the phosphate mine in "Meknesi", however, they are still unemployed until today.
The protesters raised banners, including "Employment is our right" "Employ me, pay me or imprison me" " Stop procrastinating … don’t give us fake promises …"
The protesters said that they would continue to protest in front of the ministry's headquarters until their employment.
In the provinces of “Gafsa” and “Sidi Bouzid”, the phosphate production areas witnessed frequent social protests, asking for jobs at the Gafsa phosphate company, which is the largest government workplace in the southwest of Tunisia.
In fact, the number of unemployed is 650 000, of whom more than a third are university graduates.
