Following the murder of the two tourists in Morocco: The Moroccan Women's Progressive Union ask for the adoption of a comprehensive approach to protect young people from terrorism

The Moroccan Women's Progressive under the Moroccan Workers’ Union expressed its deep sorrow over the horrific terrorist attack on the two tourists: the Danish Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24 years old, and the Norwegian, Maren Ueland, 28 years in Imlil, on the way to Toubkal, in the suburbs of Marrakech.

In its statement, the Progressive Union of Moroccan Women expressed its concern about the danger of terrorism regarding the citizens’ lives, as it is targeting women, which is an unprecedent in the history of Morocco as it is historically known by its peaceful coexistence, hospitality, openness and tolerance culture.

The Progressive Union of Moroccan Women highlighted its position regarding the phenomenon of violence, abuse, rape and harassment against women, which is becoming more and more threatening to the security, psychological and social stability of all women. Moreover, it also pointed out during the discussion of Law No. 73.13 on combating violence against women to the dangerous situation of women today. In fact, this law does not provide real guarantees for the protection of women from violence and discrimination, and does not provide the real mechanisms to implement them in real life.

The union called for the adoption of a comprehensive approach that takes into account the religious, economic and social aspects of reducing crime and protecting youth from terrorism. It called also for imposing the most severe sanctions on the perpetrators to provide security for all the Moroccans and foreigners and especially people from marginalized and remote areas.

It also stressed on the eradication of all the extremist sources and the terrorism setting from poverty, fragility, marginalization, injustice and to spread open and modern thought instead of the oppressive and monotonous thought. In addition, it stressed on reviewing a number of laws, foremost of which is Law No. 73.13, based on a human rights approach, including the amendments submitted by the national institutions, especially the Progressive Union of Moroccan Women. Besides, it stressed the need to review programs, educational content and media production, and all that would affect the collective awareness towards the values of modernity, progress, openness and religious tolerance.
