The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) announced a general strike on January 14, 2019 over the death of a cameraman who was burned during protests over the social conditions.
The strike will include the public media and the media in the private sector, and will carry the slogan "Strike for dignity ".
The tragedy of the photographer’s suicide Abdel Razzaq Al-Zarki in the western province of Kasserine, last Monday caused a shock in Tunisia.
The journalists’ syndicate said that the deceased set fire on his body as a result of the harsh social conditions and the lack of hope and opportunities, stressing that the right of freedom of expression is threatened and cannot revive in an atmosphere of corruption, impoverishment, marginalization and violation of the journalists’ rights.
The organization blamed the state and blamed it for the spread of corruption in the institutions of media, as well as, the neglect of the professional abuses against journalists and " the violation of the labour laws at the expense of their gains and livelihood."
The date scheduled for the strike is very symbolic as it coincides with the anniversary of the Tunisian revolution and the overthrown of the former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011.
