The Iraqi Labour Minister violates the trade union freedom law

The presence of an Iraqi union at a meeting of the board of directors of the Pension and Social Security Fund on December 24, chaired by the Labour Minister, sparked a wave of resentment and anger among the trade union circles.

The representatives of a number of independent trade unions considered that the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs has directly intervened in the affairs of the trade union organization, through his chairing the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Pension and Social Security Fund, and through his directives that were in violation of the trade union freedom and the protection of organization Law No. 87 of 2017, the International Law No. 87 of 2017 and the Labour Law No. 37 of 2015.

The minister's directives came in full violation of the provisions of the international agreement No. 87 of 48 in order to satisfy one party at the expense of the other. In fact, this indicates that they are not neutral and that they are biased towards one trade union at the expense of the rest of the free independent trade unions. The trade unionists consider that the ministry seeks to dominate the trade union organization by make them governmental institutions instead of independent ones to make them follow the ministry's orders.
