The Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Development in Saudi Arabia discussed during a meeting at the Ministry's General Office in Riyadh, last week with the Consul General of Riyadh the situation of the Egyptian labour, the ways of enhancing bilateral relations, the insurance of their rights in some companies and how to obtain their financial dues, and the right of migrant workers to move to other companies with other employers, as well as, the malicious absentee reports.
The Saudi media confirmed that the Saudi Ministry of Labour is currently studying the possibility of the migrant workers’ moving to another company with another employer, in case of the end of their contracts or for final exit. It pointed out to the cases in which the worker may transfer his sponsorship to another employer, including the end of the work permit, the definitive exit from the previous job, the worker’s non-receiving of his salary for three consecutive months or the entering of the establishment in the yellow or red range.
A mini committee was formed, including a number of ministers and some advisers from the Royal Court, to study the conditions of these companies to preserve the rights of the workers and liquidate them if necessary, to pay the dues of the employees, as soon as possible.
The meeting discussed the extent to which the employer was entitled to retain illegally the worker's passport without right. In fact, it was confirmed that the employer is prohibited from retaining the employee's passport unless the worker wishes so, otherwise the employer will be subject to a financial fine.
It is noteworthy that some employers use the absentee reports as a means to pressure the workers and prevent them from their entitlements or to be unable them stay and work regularly with another employer or even to leave without deportation, which is extremely harmful to the workers and their families.
