Morocco: A violent attack on a trade unionist in one of the agricultural farms in the suburbs of Sidi Suleiman

Last Friday, in one of the agricultural farms of “Awled Ben Hammadi” in the suburbs of Sidi Suleiman, the union's general secretary of the Moroccan Workers' Union (UMT) was violently attacked by a worker from the farm. Because of her critical situation, she was transferred to the local hospital for treatment. The reason behind this attack is simply practicing her constitutional and legal right to participate in the trade union work and strike.

This attack comes in light of a systematic campaign to hamper the trade union work, wages and workers, as well as, the use of the ‘ominous’ chapter 288 of the Criminal Code.

Many human rights organizations and trade union called in media statements for the implementation of law and the accountability of the aggressors and preservation of human dignity, rights and the gains of agricultural workers in the farm, as well as, the return of those expelled for union reasons to their work.

The same organizations called on the officials of the Sidi Suleiman, including the social security, administration officials and administrative authorities headed by the head of Sidi Suleiman region, to guarantee the social protection of workers.
