On Friday, the Tunisian council of ministers approved, under the supervision of President “Béji Caid Sibsi”, the status bill, which includes provisions for equal inheritance between men and women.
It is expected that the government will submit the bill in the upcoming months in the parliament for ratification.
This bill, which was announced by the Tunisian president last August, has sparked a widespread controversy in Tunisia and abroad, as it seeks to make equality the ruling law, while enabling citizens, who won’t abide by it to reject it, whether for religious or other reasons, through a contract signed in the notarial office.
The equality of inheritance is one of the most controversial issues, among the series of reforms proposed by the commission of individual freedoms and equality, set up by “Al-Sibsi” in the summer of 2017.
The inheritance laws in Tunisia, were derived from Islamic law, which are based on the rule of " The male has double the share of that of the female ".
