The network of Arab trade unionist journalists of the Arab Trade Union Confederation expressed their condemnation of the fierce campaign against websites and the arrests of some journalists in Algeria.
In a solidarity statement, the network highlighted that the last period has witnessed many restrictions on the Algerian journalists, including the attempts to restrict their independence. In fact, after that a number of voices called for the suspension of the electronic press, the network of trade union journalists was surprised by the systematic arrests that targeted a group of our colleagues working in this sector.
The network pointed out that after a series of economic constraints on the electronic press institutions in Algeria, including the reduction of advertising, Algeria arrested illegally a group of journalists from the electronic media for no real charges, including “Abdel Samar”, “Marwan Bodiab” and “Said Shitour” on judicial decision.
The network condemned the campaign of detentions and defamation of our detained colleagues, while it valued the solidarity campaign launched by a number of journalists and human rights activists in Algeria in a number of countries, increasing the efforts exerted by the team to defend the detained journalists in order to lift this flagrant injustice.
The network called on the Algerian authorities to release the other detained journalists and to implement the provisions of the International Convention on the Safety of Journalists and Media Workers and their Independence and to open a serious investigation about the malicious charges against them.
The network also expressed its readiness to harness its media capabilities to defend the detained colleagues and stand by the struggles of the journalists in Algeria and other Arab countries, in order to play their role in defending the innocents’ rights and express their opinions freely, with the guarantee of people’s rights to a free, democratic and independent media.
