“Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” (The New Arab) website highlighted that thousands of children in Yemen went to work at an early age to support themselves and their families because of the war circumstances, which ruined their childhood innocence and determined their future by joining the labor market too early. In fact, they are obliged to quit school under the deteriorating living conditions in the country.
Although the phenomenon of child labor has existed in Yemen for years, it has doubled recently. Almost all shops now recruit child labor, especially in one of the brick factories, where there are many children.
The website stressed that among the reasons for child labor is the suspension of the employees’ salaries, including the retirees and the pensions of the deceased, whose families depend on their salaries to have a living. Thus, this is the most important aspect of the crisis, which exacerbated the phenomenon of child labor, according to the Executive Director of the Union of Yemeni Children, who said that child labor was about 10 per cent before the war, but then has rise to about 70 per cent, i.e. five million Yemeni children are currently active in the labor market and that 3 million had left school.
