At the university of Algiers (2): Delayed wages and pending demands

More than 600 workers and employees from the university of Algiers 2 launched a strike, last Wednesday, and rallied in front of the main gate of the university.

The protesters raised slogans calling for the settlement of the problem regarding their delayed wages and other pending demands, accusing the Secretary-General of the university of being responsible for this problem, as confirmed by some sources.

The workers confirmed their determination to escalate by launching a regular strike that will continue until all their demands are met, pointing out in media statements that the monthly salary of some workers, including security agents, does not exceed 17 thousand dinars, which is not enough to cover the needs of their families. Thus, the situation becomes now even worsen with the delay of their salaries.

The university workers asked also for the fair distribution of the Languages’ Center income among workers, especially those with low incomes. In fact, these funds are shared equally by the center and the university. However, a minority of employees benefit from their income, in a clear discriminatory move.

On the other hand, the protesters insist on the request to install a housing committee at the university level to study the files, especially in light of the fears of depriving the future retirees from benefiting from this share of housing, which may be distributed in twisted ways, in light of the absence of an official committee that would set he principle of eligibility and priority to obtain accommodation.
