More than 650 000 public employees are on strike today, after Youssef Chahed’s government refusal to increase in the public sector salaries.
Hundreds of thousands of employees are expected to gather in front of the Tunisian parliament to protest against the national decision of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Moreover, employees will also gather at the headquarters of the Tunisian General Labor Union in the country's regions.
Several unions announced their participation in the strike in solidarity with the public employees and their right to an equitable increase in wages to adjust their deteriorating purchasing power.
It is expected to convene the national administrative body of the union to hold a meeting, this week to take escalating protest measures.
The general strike of the public service is the first after the general strike of the Tunisian General Labor Union on 26 January 1978, in which violent attacks on workers and trade unionists led to the deaths of hundreds of martyrs and wounded.
