The university hospital "Dr. Ben Zerjab" in Oran province witnessed chaos and tension among the workers last Wednesday, during the elections of the members of the preparatory committee for the elections of the labor union of the General Independent Confederation of Algerian Workers (CGATA), with the participation of more than 400 workers representing 3 300 members in the Oran University Hospital Syndicate.
This meeting turned into a hotbed of conflict between the workers and the union’s representatives, amid the exchange of charges and responsibilities, because of the delay in launching the union’s elections.
According to the protestors, the University Hospital Union of Oran province ended its electoral mandate four years ago. However, the file of social services and the union remained under this union’s supervision in an illegal way, as it rejected the General Assembly’s measure without presenting the financial and disciplinary reports of the union, as its mandate ended in 2014, after its election in 2011.
A workers’ representative added that the union refused to submit the two reports, which led to chaos within the hospital, at a time when the members of the nominations committee were illegally appointed.
For his part, the representative of the General Independent Confederation of Algerian Workers (CGATA) revealed that the General Assembly is the second of its kind, after holding a General Assembly last July, which started preparing for the elections, however, all the members resigned. Thus, another date was scheduled for holding the assembly and the selecting other members. The spokesman added that it was necessary for the workers to ask the union for the two reports before the meeting of the General Assembly.
A large number of workers rejected the decision of the members’ appointment and decided to lodge a complaint to the Administrative Court in order to appeal the appointments of the members and to ask for the financial and disciplinary reports of the outgoing union, based on the report of the judicial record.
