Dozens of workers of the so called « closed professions » (professions that foreign workers are not allowed to practice in Jordan) staged a strike, in front of the Ministry of Labor on Tuesday to protest against the employment of migrant workers in these closed professions.
The protesters said in media statements that the migrant workers led to the disruption of work and their damaging, as major foreign companies need workers with rare competencies, which are closed to Jordanians as they recruit only foreign labor to work in those professions. In addition, they asked the Ministry of Labor to intervene to resolve the issue with the companies, which are employing the foreign workers in closed professions in view of the violation of the Jordanian Labor Law.
The protestors decided to suspend their protests after agreeing with the secretary general of the Ministry to hold a meeting with Minister of Labor “Samir Mourad “next Thursday, pointing out that their meeting with the secretary general included the agreement to hold a meeting next Sunday with the foreign companies, to discuss their employment, pointing out that the ministry pledged to solve the problem next week. Moreover, it will intensify the control of the factories and projects that employ illegal migrant workers.
