The number of victims raised to six protestors during the events of Basra, on Tuesday, during the protests calling for better services, according to local and foreign media.
The news agency "Reuters" confirmed the death of 5 protestors and the injury of more than twenty wounded, following the security forces’ direct gunshots on the protestors.
On Tuesday evening, thousands of people gathered outside the provincial headquarters and were confronted by police with tear gas and gunfire.
The security forces stepped up their deployment in the streets and around the government buildings, fearing of the spread of protests. Helicopters flew over the city as part of a security plan to surround the movement of protesters.
Hundreds of protesters clashed with the security forces in the southern oil province of Basra to continue on Wednesday, after the death of a protester due to his deep wounds sustained in clashes during Monday's protests.
It is noteworthy that the Basra province has been through many protests for weeks, because of the deterioration of the living conditions and the poisoning of the drinking water. The protests reached some cities in the south, after the interruption of electricity during the hot summer months and because of the lack of employment opportunities, in addition to the lack of the appropriate government services, as well as, the spread of corruption.
