The executive head of the Labor Market Regulatory Authority and the head of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, “Oussama Al-Absi” confirmed that the flexible work system is only available for two categories of workers, that have become irregular by the employer's decision rather than the worker. He stressed that the system does not accept in any way any worker who leaves his work, or what is known as the "fugitive".
“Al-Absi” said in an interview with “Alayam”, the Bahraini newspaper, that the largest segment of irregular workers in Bahrain, which constitutes 94.5% of the total irregular employees in the kingdom, is the employer's revocation of licenses during their validity, despite that the “fugitive " workers accounts only for 5.4% of the total irregular employees.
“Al-Absi” revealed that the number of migrant workers who obtained a flexible work permit and were involved in crimes is zero, considering that the criticisms of the flexible work system are partly based on false information, and that the criticism was intended to stir the public opinion based on gossips.
“Al-Absi” said that only 5 000 people have obtained a flexible work permit since its launch in July 2017, i.e. less than a quarter of the number announced at the beginning of the system (2000 permits per month) enabled the commission to conduct questionnaires that allowed it to understand the tools of selection for the concerned worker, which needs to be addressed.
