Yemen /Hadhramaut: The teachers raise the red badge to protest against their deteriorating living conditions

Thousands of teachers in the southern province of Hadhramaut raised the red badges on Tuesday to ask for a 100 percent increase in their salaries amid the rising costs of living caused by the collapse of the local currency.

The union committee, “Ana Al-Moalam” (“I am the teacher” movement) issued a statement, announcing the continuation of the raising of the red badge for three days because of the ignoration of the teachers’ demands and rights, who are struggling under difficult economic and living conditions. The statement also confirmed the escalation of the protests, including the strike in case that their demands are not met.

The protests took place in several parts of Yemen, including the interim capital of “Aden”, the governorates of “Hadhramaut”, “Taiz”, “Abyan”, “Al- Dhala” and “Lahj”. The strikes varied between protests, road closures and civil disobedience.

The collapse of the riyal affected the value of the Yemeni employee's salary, which eroded and lost two-thirds of its value. While the government in “Aden” pays the salaries of state employees in their regions, about 1 million employees in “Sanaa” and the rest of the Houthis’ areas have been without salaries since September 2016.

It is noteworthy that the average salary of the Yemeni employee before the war was 60 thousand riyals ($ 280) at 215 riyals per dollar, but after three and a half years the employees are still without salaries, as the value of the riyal fell to more than 600 riyals per dollar. However, today the salary is only $ 100.
