The National Society for Consumer Protection association called on the Jordan Medical Association to cancel its decision concerning the raise of its wages instead of suspending it, due to the difficult economic situation witnessed by the Jordanian citizens, especially for the middle and poor classes.
In its statement, the association clarified that the list of medical wages has been amended several times due to some reasons related to the high annual inflation rates, high employment costs and medical consumables. In fact, the rate of increase exceeded the inflation and costs rate. Moreover, they called for the opening of a dialogue involving all the relevant parties: the Jordan Medical Association, the National Society for Consumer Protection the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions and the Health Insurance Association under the parliament to reach equitable solutions that would satisfy all the parties.
The decision of the Jordan Medical Association comes amid a widespread rejection of the civil society activities and the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, which considered that there is no justification for this raise in wages, as the middle class’ wages, who opt for the treatment in the public sector, has not changed for several years. Thus, this new decision to raise the wages by the Jordanian Medical Association and in light of the inability of citizens to bear these new high costs, more expenses will be charged on the burden of workers and the poor.
It also stressed that the medical tourism abroad will be negatively affected compared to other countries, which have become a strong competition for Jordan in this area, and that this promotion will contribute to the repulsion of this tourism, which means that the private health sector will be negatively affected with the decline of its financial income. In fact, all this will contribute to the recession of all the sectors related to the health sector such as hotels, restaurants, medical laboratories and pharmacies.
