Polemic regarding the Egyptian president's comments on the average wage of the National Cement Company

The Egyptian President’s statements on the workers average wage at the National Cement Company, during the opening of the “Beni Suef” Marble Complex fueled the workers' anger and outrage, who considered them as dodging from the reality.

“Al-Sissi” declared that the average wages of workers in the company ranges between 12 and 14 thousand pounds, which is not true, according to the statements of workers to a number of Egyptian media. Everybody wondered from where did these numbers come, as he announced a reduced amount while talking of the salaries of the senior management and large amounts from the poor workers, who suffer from low wages and the deterioration of their purchasing power.

Some unionist sources confirmed that the number of workers in the company does not exceed 2800 workers, where those who have the oldest salary receive no more than 7 thousand pounds. Noting that the average announced by the president is fake to cover the reality of the senior management’s high salaries comparing to the other workers, calling for their reduction to stop the bankruptcies of the company.

The workers highlighted that the claim about the company’s collapse cannot be confirmed and needs further scrutiny, stressing that there are clear intentions and attempts to announce the failure and bankruptcy of the company by the successive administrations, although that the National Cement Company has been covering Egypt's needs of cement and gypsum over the past years. Moreover, the workers asked for the return of the institution to its activity and the dismissal of the successive administrations, which claimed deliberately the company’s (fake) bankruptcy to liquidate it.

It is noteworthy that workers protested against these decisions in a number of the company’s subsidiaries, in rejection to the halt of the company, early retirement and the reduction of incentives. The workers suspended their protests after the Minister of Public Works’ promise to look into the company’s situation . However, on February 28, they were surprised by the reduction of their incentives from 390% of the base salary to only 75%, which means that many of them may be imprisoned for not being able to pay their debts to the banks.
