Algeria: Indignation among the workers of public institutions regarding Eid Al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice) grant

The Eid grant, which was allocated by some public institutions and major companies in Algeria to workers, created a lot of tension and anger among employees, especially after the cancellation of this grant in some sectors. In addition, some agencies did not program to pay the workers’ salaries before the Eid with the deprivation of other sectors, such as finance, of any increases in conjunction with Eid al-Adha.

The Eid grant has turned into anger and resentment after that its value caused tension among some employees due to the inability of some institutions to allocate a decent grant to their employees on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, especially that some of the high profit economic sectors and institutions in addition to the major energy companies have maintained this tradition.

Some national institutions and companies have started the procedures of the Eid grant distribution to their employees in conjunction with Eid Al-Adha. The major economic companies such as “Sonatrach” and “Naftal”, gave the highest Eid grant to their workers, which amounted to 7 million centimes. The company's employees were surprised by this years’ promotion unlike the previous years, as it is the first national company that gave its workers the Eid grant. This grant, which is part of the annual work grant, was allocated to all employees without exception.

On the other hand, the Eid grant caused a lot of tension and Indignation among the employees of other companies that received a poor grant, similar to the “Sonelgaz” company, which despite its large annual profit, has only allocated a grant of 15 000 dinars to the company's employees. This grant was not enough for them despite the good salaries they receive.

Following the austerity measures of the Eid grant in many other sectors, such as the finance workers, some employees asked for the necessity of having next month’s salary, paid in advance in order to enable them to buy the ‘Eid sacrifice’, especially since pervious salary was long before the Eid, which disabled them from collecting money for the Eid.
