Last Tuesday, the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved on joining the International Labor Organization Convention No. 102 of 1952 concerning minimum standards of social security, during their meeting, which includes clauses dealing with medical care, sickness, unemployment aging, and in cases of work injury, family and maternity allowances, disability and heirs.

This Convention No. 102 of 1952 is one of the most important ILO's conventions in the field of workers’ social security, which affirms that the approach to social security is a fundamental human right, which is indivisible and not just temporary in times of crisis.

The convention emphasizes the need to work on the establishment of working mechanisms in cooperation and coordination with production partners from governments, employers and workers to promote and protect the rights of migrant workers and to expand the umbrella of social insurance and the elimination of discriminatory exceptions, whether related to the quality of workers' groups or the gender of workers.

The convention also stresses the importance of calling for the ratification of the ILO Convention No. 102 on Social Security, as well as Convention No. 118 on the Protection of Social Security of Migrant Workers.

The convention is working on expanding the basis of trade union representation through the inclusion of migrant workers in order to strengthen their bargaining position in the claim for social security rights.
