Gaza: strike in UNRWA and the escalation continues

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) workers carried out a strike on Thursday, in the Gaza Strip, a day after that the union began a "labor dispute" with the administration over the dismissal of nearly 1 000 UN workers.

Dozens of workers also gathered inside the Gaza headquarters in solidarity with their dismissed colleagues.

Last Wednesday, UNRWA dismissed about 1 000 worker, which is known as the "emergency" provision in the Gaza Strip, 125 of them were definitely fired, while they will change the contracts of the others until the end of this year on a part-time basis.

The UNRWA workers union in Gaza announced also the start of a "labor dispute" to reach a comprehensive strike after 21 days of trade union activities, while a growing anger prevailed among the facilities of UNRWA as a result of this move.

A "labor dispute" is a step taken by the employees as the last resort to settle their problems, where they file a case against UNRWA in the court in order to settle the problem and reach a solution between the two parties, where the agency’s and employment laws are taken into account, in addition to the contract signed between the employee and the agency.

The period of “dispute" includes escalating legal actions and procedures guaranteed by the law of the Agency, including open or partial strikes until the agency withdraws its decision and takes extensive protest steps that may reach the five areas.
