Social protests in Iran denouncing the lifting of insurance for medicines

Tehran witnessed social protests on Monday against hundreds of workers protesting against the authorities' lifting of large amounts of drugs as part of the austerity policy that the government is trying to impose to face the return of US sanctions.

The Iranian workers' news agency pointed out that the protestors were gathered in front of the Ministry of Health headquarters in Tehran, asking for their labor and social rights.

The head of the Workers 'Coordination Council in Tehran, “Hussein Habibi”, said during the protest that the minister of health had canceled 70 to 120 kinds of medicines from the insurance coverage. In other words, it a way to prevent the workers from their rights, despite their payment of insurance premiums.

Since the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal, Iran is facing a steady wave of protests and strikes because of the poverty, marginalization and the economic regress that prevailed in most of the country's provinces.

The wave of popular protests in Iran has escalated with the start of the countdown of the return of the US sanctions in November, after the withdraw of Washington from the nuclear deal, tightening the screws on Iran's economy. Analysts claim that the authorities are not capable to deal with the immediate social repercussions of sanctions on Iran.
