Bakery workers in Beirut complain about the deteriorating conditions and the harsh social and financial conditions due to the economic crisis in the country and the arbitrary dismissal of workers in the sector due to their competitiveness with the illegal foreign labor and the exploitation of Syrian refugees, and the non-implementation of the labor law for all the workers of the ovens, especially foreign workers.
The unions of the sector asked the Minister of Labor to implement the Labor Law and the Insurance Law for all workers to protect the labor force and face the exploitation of Syrian refugees.
The unions stressed the need to form a committee of experts and professionals to study the situation of the sector in all its aspects in preparation for the issuance of resolutions and decrees that would regulate the legal relationship between the workers and the employers.
The unions asked also the management of the National Fund for Social Security to rerise the value of family allowances on the basis of 75 percent of the minimum wage, and direct payment to workers, especially that most companies and institutions did not pay these compensations to workers.
