Bahrain: Due to their miserable working conditions, the number of suicides increase among the migrant workers

Human Rights Watch organization said in a report last month that hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, mostly from South Asia, face exploitation and the violation of their rights in Bahrain, despite the government reforms to protect them.

The 123-page report, "For a better life:  the violations of migrant workers’ rights in Bahrain and the agenda for the government’s reforms”, documents all forms of violations and exploitation practiced on migrant workers in Bahrain and explains in details the government’s efforts to redress, compensate and support the workers' protection.

The organization stressed that the Bahraini authorities need to implement the existing labor guarantees and the compensatory mechanisms, prosecute the abusive employers, and pass the 2012 law for private sector workers to include the domestic workers, who are excluded from the major protection measures.

The report also highlighted that the employers who violate the rights of migrant workers do not face penalties under the Bahraini law and rarely face the criminal consequences set out in the Penal Code and the anti-human trafficking laws if they have ever encountered them.

On the other hand, the number of suicides in Bahrain has increased over the past decade, especially among migrant workers. The increase in suicides is an indication of the poor conditions of these workers, as well as, their physical abuse, forced labor, miserable living conditions and isolation.
