The Mauritanian doctors’ movements have been escalated, following the approaching of the suspension of their strike, which has started since June 14 to call for a general assembly of doctors, while the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Health informed the leaders of the doctors' unions that they are invited to a meeting with the president next Tuesday.
A number of doctors called for the need for the formation of a general assembly, after the suspension of their strike for a month, while the letter sent by the heads of the doctors' unions to president “Ould Abdel Aziz” did not please the doctors, as they were asking for the formation of a general assembly, after the end of the deadline of the strike suspension. In fact, it started on June 14 for two weeks in conjunction with the African Summit hosted in Nouakchott. In addition, another two weeks will be extended, following the request of president “Ould Abdel Aziz”, stressing the need for the formation of this assembly during the weekend.
The leaders of the medical unions are pushed for the postponement of the formation of the general assembly until the meeting with president “Ould Abdel Aziz” next Tuesday, while people who want to urge it claim that doctors have made a lot of concessions over the past few weeks and that the authorities must meet their demands.
On May 7, the Mauritanian doctors entered in an open-ended strike after weeks of their partial suspension and their organization of protests. The Ministry of Health responded by dismissing a number of specialists from their administrative positions in hospitals.
The open strike of five weeks continued, where several attempts to resolve the conflict failed, in light of the government’s insistence on stopping the strike before the beginning of negotiations with doctors and in light of the doctors’ refusal to stop their strike before meeting their demands.
It is noteworthy that doctors are asking for making emergencies free, guaranteeing the quality of medical devices, the involvement of specialists in purchasing them, the fight against the counterfeit medicines and the improvement of the human conditions through the increase of their salaries and compensations.
