Morocco: Traders in Jerada strike to ask for the release of the detainees

Dozens of traders in the city of Jerada will be on strike on Monday to ask for the release of the arrested activists, following the protests that took place in the province during the past months.

The local media confirmed that dozens of traders in the covered market entered into a strike, following the activists’ call launched on the social network media.

The protesters said that the strike is one step among the other remaining protest steps announced by activists in their protest program this week amid a heavy security blockade.

It is noteworthy that on December 22, Jerada witnessed protests following the death of two brothers in a random coal mine, before it sparked in early last February when a third person died in another random mine.

On March 14, the Moroccan city witnessed violent confrontations between the security forces and the protestors, which resulted in the injury of dozens of people and the arrest of about 70 protesters.

Protesters complain about the economic marginalization and lack of job opportunities, amid the government promises to create new projects that would open the door for job opportunities.
