Libyan Coast Guard commander sanctioned for trafficking in human beings and torturing migrants

According to “Reuters” news agency, the United Nations imposed sanctions on a Libyan Coast Guard commander and accused him of human trafficking, smuggling and beatings of migrants.

“Abderrahmane Milad”, a commander of the Coast Guard unit in the town of Zawia, west of Tripoli, was among the six people who were subject to the punishment for human trafficking in Libya on June 7, which is the first step of its kind.

The UN Security Council said that unit of “Milad” was associated with the ongoing violence against migrants and other human traffickers, and the use of a ship as a detention center for irregular migrants in harsh conditions where they were subject to violence.

Migrant smugglers have been able to get huge profits, taking advantage of the security vacuum in Libya since the uprising backed by NATO in 2011 that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
